Election Night Coverage: Mitch McConnell wins Kentucky Senate election against Bruce Lunsford

According to CNN News, Republican Leader Mitch McConnell appears to have won a fifth Senate term, sparing his party a devastating loss on a tough Election Day. On Election Night (11/04/08) at 08:59 PM, CNN projected that Senator John McCain has won the State of Kentucky and Senator Mitch McConnell has defeated Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford.

McConnell’s win in Kentucky over Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford makes it harder for Democrats to reach 60 seats in the Senate, which would give them enormous power to push through legislation.

With nearly 50 percent of precincts reporting, McConnell is holding a 51-to-49 percent lead over Lunsford, prompting Fox News to call the race for the Republican. If McCain loses Tuesday night, McConnell will likely emerge as the most powerful Republican in Washington as the Senate minority leader. Democrats have already picked up three Senate seats Tuesday, expanding their majority to 54-46, with a host of races still to be decided.

Election Night News: ABC News Calls Kay Hagan the Winner over Liddy Dole (8:30pm)

Incumbent Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole lost her tough Senate reelection battle against Democratic State Senator Kay Hagan, ABC News has anounced at 8:30pm on Nov 4, 2008.  In the last week of the campaign, Senator Elizabeth Dole began running an ad accusing Kagan of having ties to an atheist group, leading Kagan to file a lawsuit against Dole.

Just last week, as his wife Elizabeth was making her own campaign stop about two hours to the west in Salisbury, North Carolina, former Sen. Bob Dole spoke at Sarah Palin’s rally Saturday night rally in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“Now I know that Sen. Bob Dole was just here — I was honored to get to meet him,” Palin said. “And you must be so proud of Bob Dole. Truly he is a great American. He is a hero, a servant to his country in war and in peace.”

Last week’s rally marked the fourth straight time Palin has made a public event in North Carolina without Sen. Elizabeth Dole by her side. The last time the two appeared together was at a presidential debate watch party in Greenville on Oct. 7, 2008.

Lieberman Likely to Lose Committee Chair if Democrats win Control

Democratic leaders are discussing a major reshuffling of Senate committee chairmanships, according to multiple sources, and the proposed changes include ousting Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) from his coveted chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.

Lieberman, a former Democrat who supports Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for president, is likely to lose his gavel on the Homeland Security Committee he has chaired since January 2007, say the sources who see him being replaced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (Hawaii), the committee’s third-ranking Democrat.

Lieberman spokesman Marshall Witmann dismissed the speculation, saying Lieberman “is focused on doing all he can to elect John McCain as president rather than post-election Washington politics.”
