Transcript of Obama’s Primetime TV Infomercial Program (aired: Wednesday, October 29, 2008)

On Wednesday, October 29, 2008, Senator Barack Obama used his prime-time half-hour paid TV program to make what was effectively a closing argument to a national audience of millions. The 30-minute program, which was broadcast at 8:00pm EDT / 7:00 pm CDT, was the first time in 16 years that a presidential candidate has bought network air, in prime time, for an extended-length campaign commercial. The Obama TV program (a.k.a., “Obama Primetime TV Infomercial”) was shown on NBC, CBS, Fox, Univision, BET and TV One (on 10/29.08).

Here is a rush transcript of Obama’s Primetime TV address, which aired on Wednesday, October 29, 2008.

Obama begins:

For the past 20 months, I’ve traveled the length of this country and Michelle and I have met so many Americans who are looking for real and lasting change that makes a difference in their lives. Their stories are American stories, stories that reflect the state of our union. I’d like to introduce you to some of those people tonight.

I’ll also lay out in specific detail what I’ll do as president to restore the long-term health of our economy and our middle class, and how I’ll make the decisions to get us there.

What struck me most about the stories you’ll see tonight, is not just the challenges these Americans face, but also their resolve to change this country.

Kerry PAC asks for Google Keyword Money

IN 2004, John Kerry was subject to Web attacks during his campaign for president and now the Democratic Massachusetts Senator’s PAC is using Google ads to fight smears against Barack Obama. As opposed to his unending stream of e-mail donation requests in 2004 to buy TV ads, Kerry’s leadership PAC has asked supporters outright to donate money to buying Google ads. The goal is to reach undecided voters curious about Obama’s alleged connections to William Ayers, domestic terrorism, or socialist thought.

Obama To Air TV Special Tonight

Barack Obama is set to air his half-hour TV special on most of the major networks tonight, an experiment in long-form TV advertising that hasn’t been attempted since Ross Perot — and not by any major-party nominee in many decades. This is in many ways a tribute to the massive fundraising ability of the Obama campaign that they could even think to attempt this, in contrast to Perot’s self-financing.

McCain Ad: Obama Isn’t Ready To Be President “Yet”

The new McCain ad, set to air nationally in order to pre-rebut Barack Obama’s TV special tonight, rolls many of the campaign’s attacks against Obama into one single spot for the home stretch — that Obama is a vapid celebrity who will raise your taxes and isn’t ready to lead the country in tumultuous times:

Barack Obama’s Closing Argument by TV Commercial, Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s fundraising prowess — a record $150 million in September alone — is permitting him to continue to run ads nearly everywhere. His campaign has even bought a 30-minute political ad that will run on Wednesday night, October 29, 2008 on major broadcast networks, making him the first presidential candidate to do so since billionaire Ross Perot in 1992.

Obama’s campaign purchased the same half-hour of prime time on Wednesday night, October 29, 2008 from 8-8:30 p.m. ET on CBS and NBC (a deal with ABC is still in negotiations). FOX, which has broadcast rights to Game 6, planned to air a pre-game show, and the first pitch is usually thrown at 8:22 p.m. However, Major League Baseball agreed Wednesday to push back the start of Game 6 by about 15 minutes to allow a television commercial Obama plans to run on Oct. 29 — the Wednesday before the November 4 election.

Fox sold the half-hour to Obama’s campaign for just under $1 million after MLB agreed to the network’s request to move back the game’s start time to 8:35 p.m., according to the newspaper.
